The Abandonment

The Abandonment, Oil on Canvas, 2025

You will find this scene if you wander long enough in the upper halls of our beloved National Gallery of Ireland.

A statue by Guillaume Geefs depicts Mary Magdalene, who was cast off to sea and shipwrecked off the coast of Provence. She sits on a rocky shore, a foreigner in search of a new home, fishing nets tangled around her. Behind her is a festive tableau by Ireland’s Daniel Maclise entitled Merry Christmas in the Baron’s Hall.
